Skiathos is creating Greece’s first autism-friendly destination by adapting tourism services and public spaces to better support people on the autism spectrum and their families.
MAKING TOURISM MORE INCLUSIVE
Led by the Municipality of Skiathos in partnership with the NGO Open Horizons, the initiative aims to make the island more accessible and welcoming for neurodiverse visitors. The programme focuses on training staff in the tourism and service sectors, adapting public and private spaces to sensory needs, and raising awareness throughout the local community. Tailored tourism packages and dedicated accessibility measures help ensure that families with autistic members can enjoy a more comfortable and predictable experience.
COMBINING TRAINING WITH DIGITAL TOOLS
Since 2025, Skiathos has been developing Greece’s first autism-friendly tourism model. The initiative combines capacity building with practical solutions that support visitors before and during their stay. Staff receive specialised training to better understand and respond to autism, while a digital map and mobile application are being developed to identify quieter beaches, low-noise restaurants, and less crowded routes. By linking information, training, and environmental adaptations, the project creates a holistic approach to accessible tourism.
SETTING A NEW STANDARD FOR ACCESSIBILITY
The initiative is already helping to improve the experience of visitors with autism by reducing stress and making the island easier to navigate. Increased awareness among residents and businesses is fostering a more inclusive and supportive community, while accessibility measures are becoming an integral part of local tourism services. By placing people’s needs at the centre of planning, Skiathos is creating a model that can inspire other destinations and contribute to more inclusive tourism across Greece and beyond.
