Madrid’s Centre for Innovation in Circular Economy (CIEC Madrid)

BUILDING A HUB FOR CIRCULAR INNOVATION

Established by the Madrid City Council in 2022, CIEC Madrid serves as a meeting point for the city’s growing circular economy ecosystem. Developed through partnerships with universities, companies, and foundations, the centre promotes collaboration across sectors while supporting entrepreneurship, research, and citizen engagement. Through its programmes, CIEC Madrid has supported 122 startups, helped 44 companies adopt circular practices, and created 322 jobs, demonstrating the role of public-private cooperation in advancing the green transition.

CONNECTING KNOWLEDGE, TECHNOLOGY, AND COMMUNITIES

CIEC Madrid combines research, business support, and citizen participation to foster innovation in the circular economy. Through laboratories, pilot projects, mentoring programmes, and partnerships with leading universities, the centre enables the testing of new solutions adapted to Madrid’s climate and urban needs. Its activities promote sustainability, digitalisation, and social inclusion, while encouraging collaboration between academia, businesses, public institutions, and civil society. The centre itself also serves as a living laboratory, using smart technologies to monitor and reduce resource consumption and emissions.

CREATING A CIRCULAR ECONOMY FOR EVERYDAY LIFE

CIEC Madrid has become a focal point for raising awareness and encouraging practical action on sustainability. Nearly 20,000 citizens have participated in its activities, while around 170 companies have integrated circular economy principles into their operations. The centre has helped generate new knowledge, support inclusive entrepreneurship, and strengthen local networks. Built primarily from wood and designed as a highly efficient public facility, CIEC Madrid offers a replicable model for cities seeking to create more sustainable, resilient, and community-driven urban environments.
