Järvaveckan brings Sweden's entire political establishment to one of its most marginalised suburbs, turning a segregated neighbourhood into a national stage for democratic dialogue and inclusion.
A SUBURB AT THE CENTRE OF NATIONAL DIALOGUE
Järva is one of Sweden's most segregated areas — a place that is often the object of political debate, but rarely its host. In 2008, Ahmed Abdirahman sowed the seed by creating an alumni network of local high school students. Within years, the vision grew into a unique social-impact event fostering integration, uniting people from different parts of society, and creating an arena for voices that often go unheard in public space. Today, Järvaveckan (Järva Week) hosts more than 52,000 visitors annually, with 300+ participating organisations and 70+ seminars, panel discussions, and speeches by heads of parties, including prime ministers.
DEMOCRACY BEYOND THE USUAL CIRCLES
Järvaveckan's innovation lies in relocating a central national democratic conversation to a multi-ethnic suburb that is usually the object of political debate, not its host. By gathering every parliamentary party leader, the media, and major institutions on the same ground as residents of disadvantaged areas, it creates a unique platform that tears down the invisible barriers between power and the people it governs. This is complemented by Järvaveckan Research, publishing 12 knowledge-based reports in 2024 alone on integration, health equity, digital inclusion, and civic participation, and Järvaveckan Dialogue, with 9 roundtables and 350 participants in 2024.
SHAPING POLICY FROM THE SUBURBS
Järvaveckan is now recognised by 73% of all Swedes and 70% of business owners. In 2024, 77% of visitors said the event makes a real difference to people's futures. Research reports generated 20.2 million SEK in media value and directly informed policy discussions at national and regional levels, including meetings with the Minister for Public Health on inequalities in healthcare access. By combining a mass public event with data-driven research and deep dialogue, Järvaveckan has created a permanent infrastructure for informed, cross-partisan conversation on integration, with growing impact year on year since 2017.
