DIGNITAS: A Digital Platform for Homeless Support in Madrid

© Madrid City Council

DIGNITAS helps people experiencing homelessness in Madrid access essential services and receive timely support through a simple and inclusive digital platform.

MAKING SUPPORT EASIER TO FIND

Developed as part of Madrid’s Strategy on Prevention and Care for People Experiencing Homelessness 2022–2027, DIGNITAS responds to the needs of people facing extreme vulnerability. The application provides clear and easy access to information on shelters, day centres, soup kitchens, clothing banks, health facilities, and hygiene services. It also sends weather alerts and information about special situations that may affect users. Since its launch in December 2025, the platform has been gradually expanding its reach across the city.

DESIGNING TECHNOLOGY WITH THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST

DIGNITAS was created through a co-design process involving social organisations, specialised professionals, and 25 people experiencing homelessness who helped shape and validate the platform. The app includes a multilingual chat service managed by the Madrid en Calle outreach team, enabling users to receive immediate assistance and personalised guidance. By combining digital tools with direct human support, the initiative demonstrates how simple technology can help improve access to services for some of the most vulnerable members of society.

STRENGTHENING OUTREACH AND SOCIAL INCLUSION

The platform improves the way people experiencing homelessness connect with essential support, offering a more secure and personalised channel than previously available. Initially tested with users and outreach professionals, DIGNITAS is now promoted through social services, hospitals, and consulates, with access supported by volunteers and street teams for those without mobile phones. By bringing together technology and community networks, the initiative strengthens social inclusion and helps ensure that no one is left without access to vital assistance.
