Student-Led Climate Action for Lower-Carbon Schools

Mandra–Eidyllia is turning schools into living climate labs, where students measure their own carbon footprint and lead practical action to cut emissions.

CLASSROOMS BECOME CLIMATE LABS

The Municipality of Mandra–Eidyllia is transforming schools into Living Laboratories and Climate Academy Hubs, giving students, teachers, and families a direct role in addressing climate change. Rather than learning about environmental challenges only through textbooks, students investigate how their own school consumes energy, uses water, generates waste, and contributes to emissions. The programme makes climate action tangible and local, helping young people understand the connection between everyday behaviour and global challenges while turning schools into centres of knowledge, awareness, and community engagement.

STUDENTS AS CLIMATE RESEARCHERS

What sets the initiative apart is its rigorous scientific methodology. Using the internationally recognised ISO 14064 standard for greenhouse gas accounting, students gather and analyse real-world data on their school's environmental impact. Working alongside teachers and experts, they identify opportunities to reduce emissions and improve sustainability practices. Each participating school then undergoes an independent assessment and certification process, ensuring that achievements are measurable and verified. By combining citizen participation with professional standards, the programme gives students first-hand experience of how climate policy is developed, monitored, and evaluated.

LOW-COST ACTION, LASTING CLIMATE SKILLS

The programme delivers environmental benefits while equipping students with skills that extend far beyond climate education. Through hands-on research, teamwork, data analysis, and problem-solving, young people develop the confidence and competencies needed to become active citizens and future leaders. Schools implement practical, low-cost interventions that reduce their carbon footprint and improve resource efficiency, while families and local communities become more engaged in sustainability efforts. The result is lasting behavioural change, measurable environmental impact, and a generation better prepared to contribute to a greener future.
