Youth Center Gabrovo: A Direct Line to City Hall

Youth Center Gabrovo transforms an abandoned theatre into a hub where young people can develop ideas, lead initiatives, and influence local policy.

A PLACE DESIGNED FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

Like many smaller European cities, Gabrovo faces challenges including demographic decline, youth migration, and limited opportunities for civic and social engagement. In response, the municipality transformed a former summer theatre into a modern youth centre with offices, event spaces, accommodation facilities, and a 1,300-seat stage. Opened in December 2024, the centre provides a permanent home for activities ranging from culture and sports to entrepreneurship and community projects. More importantly, it creates a visible space where young people can meet, organise, and become active participants in local life.

A DIRECT LINE TO CITY HALL

The centre's most distinctive feature is that participation does not stop at the front door. Alongside the new facility, Gabrovo established a Youth Parliament that advises the mayor and contributes directly to the municipality's youth policies and development plans. Young people meet regularly with elected representatives and municipal leaders, helping shape decisions rather than simply reacting to them. Through initiatives such as the Political Brunch, they engage in open conversations with Members of Parliament, councillors, and local officials. The result is a rare model in which youth participation is continuous, visible, and embedded in the everyday work of local government.

BUILDING THE NEXT GENERATION OF CIVIC LEADERS

The centre has quickly become a focal point for youth life in Gabrovo, attracting broad participation through free activities and targeted outreach to underrepresented groups. Through volunteering, youth-led events, and the Small Projects Programme, young people gain practical experience in leadership, organisation, and civic action while delivering initiatives that benefit their communities. The impact extends beyond the centre itself. NGOs, cultural organisations, and public institutions are launching new youth-focused initiatives, while young people increasingly see themselves not only as residents of the city but as active partners in shaping its future.
