Como en Casa helps older people in rural communities live independently by combining nutritious meals with regular social support and personal contact.
BRINGING CARE TO RURAL COMMUNITIES
Launched by the Guadalajara Provincial Council in 2020, Como en Casa supports people over the age of 65 living in small towns across the province. The service currently reaches more than 600 users in 145 municipalities, providing balanced daily meals tailored to individual dietary needs. Delivered in coordination with regional Social Services, the initiative enables older residents to remain in their homes and continue living within their communities, preserving their autonomy and quality of life.
COMBATING LONELINESS THROUGH EVERYDAY SUPPORT
Beyond providing food, the project addresses one of the most pressing challenges facing older people: social isolation. Each delivery includes regular human contact and informal monitoring, creating trusted relationships and helping identify potential risks at an early stage. For many users, the daily visit represents an important source of companionship and reassurance. By embedding care and wellbeing into a basic service, Como en Casa offers a simple but effective response to loneliness and vulnerability in later life.
STRENGTHENING LOCAL LIFE AND SOCIAL COHESION
The initiative creates lasting benefits for both individuals and rural communities. Users receive reliable support that helps them maintain their independence and continue living in familiar surroundings. At the same time, the programme generates local economic activity by supporting restaurants that prepare meals using local products and by creating employment opportunities linked to service delivery. By reinforcing social ties and supporting local businesses, Como en Casa contributes to more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable rural communities.
